- Will there be any cost to home owner’s association / body corporate? There are no direct costs, we cover all of the Fibre, switching and installation costs.
- Can I keep my Telkom landline?Yes you may, you can either keep your Telkom line or port (bring over) your current number over to VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol). This simply means that you make calls over your new Fibre line and not over the Telkom copper line. There is no extra charge for this voice line and the call rates are considerably cheaper. There is a once off charge of R450 for the port, no monthly fees except if you make phone calls.
- Can we use any internet provider?Currently this will be a closed network due to Intense Broadband investing heavily into the infrastructure. This will however change to an open access network in the future.
- Do I need to sign a long term contract? At Intense Broadband we believe in giving the client options. We have month to month, 12 month and 24 month contracts.
- I enjoy watching Apple TV and Netflix, which line would be best for me?As you are streaming video content and not downloading you would be best serviced with a higher line speed on a capped account. Best for you would probably be a 20Mbps line.
- What happens when I run out of data?If you reach your cap, you can top up through your online portal, which you will be able to access even when your data has run out. From here you can request more data or simply purchase with your credit card. You can also see your usage stats on this portal as well as contact support for any queries you may have.
- Once the Fibre is installed do I have to use it?The Fibre services are completely voluntary and will not affect any of your current services should you chose to continue with them.
- What is included in the once off installation cost of my Fibre service?Included is your Fibre router with wireless; installation of your Fibre cable into your home and a walk through of how to use your new service.
- Why should I switch to Fibre to the Home?Fibre is up to 30x faster than ADSL. Fibre provides a more stable connection. A fibre connection is symmetrical (meaning that upload and download speeds are the same). Fibre can carry several different types of traffic concurrently. Internet, voice, video without affecting quality.
- Will the ADSL service be cancelled? In time, the UT’s ADSL service will be cancelled. The equipment for these connections is very out of date and there is too little development in the field of “Internet via telephone cables” to continue with it.
- Is there a calculated value to having FTTH services installed?Yes. A recent study in the USA by RVA & Associates, a Tulsa-based consulting firm, surveyed home buyers and developers. It found that Fibre-to-the-home adds about $5,000 to the purchase price of an individual dwelling. There is yet to be such a survey conducted in South Africa.
- Is fibre-to-the-home primarily a technology for getting high-definition movies on demand? Not at all. While the vastly higher bandwidth and transmission speeds offered by fibre-to-the-home is certainly enabling video providers to offer a wider range of products and services, users of other applications will benefit as well. Gamers will get access to more powerful multi-player applications. Avenues will open for distance learning. Opportunities for telecommuting and working at home will increase. And, just as Internet applications and solutions have grown more sophisticated with the expansion of available bandwidth thus far, you can be sure that this leap into next-generation broadband will inspire further innovations that we cannot even imagine at this point.
- Can I use my existing wireless access points in my home?Yes, Fibre is effectively replacing the copper line you currently have, any access point can be plugged into your router.
- Would this new connection be Direct Fibre or indirect Fibre? In other words, would the fibre cable come directly into my home or would a node on the fibre ring be connected by copper wire to my, and other, houses?Your connection will be purely Fibre from our server into the building. From there we will use the existing CAT5 cable that is already installed into every apartment.
- Will we need new phones for VoIP?Yes. Due to IP Phones using a different technology than more commonly used telephones your existing phone will have to be replaced with either a normal desktop phone or a cordless phone. Pricing available on request but range from R850 to R2000.
